Pick-up Sticks

Although this work is obviously a sculpture, I wasn’t thinking of it as such when I made it. I was using the painted dowels to draw lines in space, with the idea of a radically expanded painting surface. The feet were originally placed in the corners of a portrait-format stretcher laid on the ground. The work is a bit shop-worn. We’ve been using it as our Xmas tree. Each year we get together with the kids and write on cut-out stars the special things that happened during the year. We then tie them onto the sticks with coloured pipe-cleaners.
