This work was originally part of the exhibition The Waves, in which lines of the same colour carried across the other works in the space. In this diptych that notion is retained, although the emphasis falls on the way the lines carry into the imaginary as they cross the gap between the two pieces.
Where the gestural mark in expressionism says “I was here”, the lines here abstract that gesture, saying “I was here but I’m not here anymore”, or “I’m hiding”.
The cotton tape itself disappears out of sight, behind the stretcher and out of the play, but the lines cross the space between the two separate paintings, going to nowhere, then resuming from nowhere. They hide for a while, like quantum particles.
